Later he was transferred by the company he was employed by to Johannsburg, South Africa where he spent about twenty years of his life superintending three gold mines in that vicinity. In 1904, he returned to America and made his home with his brother, Barney and family in Sedan, MN. He made his home in Sedan for 25years and died at the age of 71 years.

(Medical):Michael Rooney was born in Ireland. His mother died in Ireland while Michael was an infant. When he was three years of age his father, Thomas Rooney and an Aunt, Katherine Rooney, brought him to Wakefield Township, Quebec, Canada. His father was employed in the woods near Ottawa, Canada for about seventeen years. He decided to take up farming and heard there was much land being given away in the United States and in 1855 he removed to New York City and a few years later to St Anthony, MN where he was employed until about 1863 when they came to Stearns county and settled on a homestead in Raymond township.
Thomas Rooney and his son Michael Rooney took adjoining claims and during the winter Thomas Rooney went to live at the home ofhis son. A claim jumper came through the country and finding the log cabin un-occupied move his family in and laid claim to the property.
In 1872, the grasshoppers came and destroyed all the crops and Michael Rooney left his father on his homestead and went to Montana to hunt buffalo. The hides were worth 0 each and the government granted them permission to shoot a certain number.
In 1896, Michael Rooney and Margaret Murphy were united in marriage at the Assumption Church in Eden Valley. Margaret wasborn in Ottawa, Canada of a family of eight children.
To Michael and Margaret were born four children that eventually lived on their own farms in Raymond township near Padua, MN.
The Rooney families were the first to settle in Raymondtownship. They erected a church and a school building in Padua.The original church structure was sold to Michael Rooney and a new church was erected in 1886. (This church burned down in 1943 and the present church was then built).
Michael Rooney served on the school board and as assessor for several years. He died in 1918, at age 74 years, and is buriedin St Anthony's cemetery at Padua.

(Medical): Hugh M Rooney was born in Ottawa, Canada and immigrated, with his family, to the U.S. about 1864. They moved first to St Anthony Falls, the site of the present city of Minneapolis, which at that time was so small the town could be covered in a half hour by horse and buggy. Hugh attended a parochial school there until they moved to Padua, MN.
In 1889, he was united in marriage to Winifred S Rooney at Sauk Centre, MN. They moved to the farm near Brooten where they made their home until the time of their deaths. Winifred died in 1942, at the age of 77 years. Hugh was a lumberman in northern Minnesota for a time, and grew well acquainted with the Indians, learning their languages and customs. He lived also in Montana for a short time, engaged in hunting. Family stories are built around these early days, when his party would often sleep on the ground during the winter, shooting 15 or 20 buffalo before breakfast. At times the Indians would cause trouble, ruining the buffalo skins, terrorizing the men, and breaking up camp. Farming, however, was Mr Rooney's livelihood, and he practiced it for 60 years. Hugh was 94 years of age at the time of his death and had resided on the homestead five miles west of Brooten for almost 60 years.

Bangor township in this county was the scene, on Tuesday evening of last week, of a terrible fire caused by a bolt of lightning, during the rain and thunder storm on that evening, the house of Hugh Rooney of the village of Brooten was struck by lightning and almost instantly burned to the ground. The bolt entered the chimney, scattering the brick all over the lower floor, Mr. Rooney was partially stunned by the schock but recovered his physcial and mental activity in an instant and with the assistance of his wife managed to rescue the children who were asleep upstairs, by Mrs Rooney handling them out through the window from which she afterward jumped herself. In their scant night clothing they made their way in the drenching rain to thehouse of a neighbor where they were sheltered through the night. Some of the children were obliged to stay in bed the next day until kind neighbors came to their assistance with clothing. Mrs Rooney who was in a delicate condition, gave birth to a child after reaching the neighbors house, the excitement and exertion no doubt hastening the process of parturition. According to latest report mother and baby as well as the other members of the family were getting along all right. It certainly was a narrow escape from death on part of these people, wither by the electric stroke or the fire it instantly originated. The loss to Mr Rooney is a severe one, as he is a poor man, but he may consider it a fortune that the lives of his dear ones were saved.

(Medical): Hugh M Rooney was born in Ottawa, Canada and immigrated, with his family, to the U.S. about 1864. They moved first to St Anthony Falls, the site of the present city of Minneapolis, which at that time was so small the town could be covered in a half hour by horse and buggy. Hugh attended a parochial school there until they moved to Padua, MN.
In 1889, he was united in marriage to Winifred S Rooney at Sauk Centre, MN. They moved to the farm near Brooten where they made their home until the time of their deaths. Winifred died in 1942, at the age of 77 years. Hugh was a lumberman in northern Minnesota for a time, and grew well acquainted with the Indians, learning their languages and customs. He lived also in Montana for a short time, engaged in hunting. Family stories are built around these early days, when his party would often sleep on the ground during the winter, shooting 15 or 20 buffalo before breakfast. At times the Indians would cause trouble, ruining the buffalo skins, terrorizing the men, and breaking up camp. Farming, however, was Mr Rooney's livelihood, and he practiced it for 60 years. Hugh was 94 years of age at the time of his death and had resided on the homestead five miles west of Brooten for almost 60 years.

Bangor township in this county was the scene, on Tuesday evening of last week, of a terrible fire caused by a bolt of lightning, during the rain and thunder storm on that evening, the house of Hugh Rooney of the village of Brooten was struck by lightning and almost instantly burned to the ground. The bolt entered the chimney, scattering the brick all over the lower floor, Mr. Rooney was partially stunned by the schock but recovered his physcial and mental activity in an instant and with the assistance of his wife managed to rescue the children who were asleep upstairs, by Mrs Rooney handling them out through the window from which she afterward jumped herself. In their scant night clothing they made their way in the drenching rain to thehouse of a neighbor where they were sheltered through the night. Some of the children were obliged to stay in bed the next day until kind neighbors came to their assistance with clothing. Mrs Rooney who was in a delicate condition, gave birth to a child after reaching the neighbors house, the excitement and exertion no doubt hastening the process of parturition. According to latest report mother and baby as well as the other members of the family were getting along all right. It certainly was a narrow escape from death on part of these people, wither by the electric stroke or the fire it instantly originated. The loss to Mr Rooney is a severe one, as he is a poor man, but he may consider it a fortune that the lives of his dear ones were saved.

They lived there three years, and then moved to Raymond township where they homesteaded 160 acres located about 2 1/2 mile southwest of Padua. Their original farm machinery consisted of a breaking plow and a cradle.
William continued to live there for the next 70 years until his death, at age 76 years. From a wilderness of hazel brush and oak trees, the Rooneys, in two generations had built one of the nicest and most modern farm homes in the township. During the first years, Will Rooney, walked from his home to St Cloud, a distance of at least fifty miles, for supplies such as flour, sugar, coffee and salt.
For almost half a century, he served as chairman of the school board in District 7 and was also a director of the creamery board at Padua.


Cause of death: Cerebral thrombosis (Paralysis of right side and muscles of respiration on right); with contributory causes of Bronchitis, congestive (due to the right sided respiratory paralysis). Scrotal hernia, left side, for 20 years.

(Medical):Mary Ann Killeen was first married to Michael Flavin in 1879 at 19 years of age. They had 5 children. Michael Flavin was a heavy drinker and died young. Mary Ann left Minnesota and went to Helena, MT and opened a boarding house to support herself and the children.
Leslie McKinney, from the same town in Minnesota, also came to Helena shortly thereater and, just by chance, went to her boarding house. She had known him back east and had taught his sister in a little one room school house where she taught before getting married. There was 10 years difference in their ages, and they eventually married on October 19, 1893. She was 32and he, 22. They had four children.
Mary Ann and Leslie ran a dairy farm or ranch and they furnished the Northern Pacific Railroad and East Helena with milk. Leslie was a very mechanically minded person and had rigged a plumbing system into the house giving them running water and had the dairy running by steam.
At one time, they owned 23 houses in Helena. The houses sold for $2000 and less. The dairy was burned out twice and they lost heavily in buildings and livestock.
Leslie died from a stroke at age 55. Mary Ann made her home in her later years with her daughter, Grace, in Helena. Mary Ann died in her sleep, while visiting overnight, at the home of herson, Leonard, in Helena, MT.
